About Abbeville
Abbeville was settled and named by the Seminole and Creek Indians who lived among the creeks and streams and began farming. The indians named Abbie Creek "Yabba Abba" meaning "agrove of dobwood trees". The creek runs through the wiregrass. Abbeville is comfortably nestled between rolling hills and Lake Eufaula. The most famous historical figure, William C. Oates, established a law practice her in 1859. He later lead Company G or the 15th Alabama during the Civil War and went on the be bovernor in 1894. There are abundant activities including hunting, fishing, and hiking with shops providing unique gifts and the like for its nearly 3,000 residents or visitors.
