About Alden
Famous for the black water baths, which were reputed to have healing powers, the town of Alden is the center of Erie County. East of the major city of Buffalo, this small town was formed in 1823. From 1891 onwards, travellers came from miles around to bathe in the waters around Alden. Named after a family of early settlers, the town of Alden has a population of just over 10,000 people. The Erie County Correctional Facility, located to the northeast of Alden, is a major employer. The northeast part of Alden is known as Wende and contains several public institutions, including the Wende Correctional Facility.
