About Alfred
A town in Allegany County in upstate New York, Alfred boasts three higher education institutions, remarkable for a town of just over 5000 people. Alfred University and Alfred State College are located in the center of town, the historic old village. Many of the buildings in the historic old town feature terra cotta tile roofs, made from the large clay deposits in the area. The New York State College of Ceramics was founded here in 1900 to make use of the local materials, one of the largest claybeds in the state. Earliest settlers in Alfred are recorded in 1807, founding a village on the trails used by the Seneca natives and later the Revolutionary War soldiers.
