Amenia Town - Town Court

About Amenia
A name derived from the Latin for "pleasing to the eye", the town of Amenia is central to Dutchess County on the eastern edge of New York State. Formed by the Great Nine Partners Patent land grant in 1697, the town of Amenia was officialy formed in 1788. With direct commuter train service to New York City through the Metro North Railroad, Amenia residents enjoy small town living with big city access.

The town is served by the Wassaic Train Station, named after Wassaic Creek and Wassaic hamlet, a part of the town of Amenia. One of the more notable residents of Amenia was Gail Borden, the inventor of condensed milk, who established his first factory here. Perhaps more famous is Margaret Hamilton, the actress who played the Wicked Witch in Wizard of Oz and had her ashes scattered here.
