About Amityville
A seaside town on Long Island, Amityville was once known as Huntington West Neck South. That unwieldy name was changed by committee, however the meeting to pick a new name was so fractious and divided a consensus could not be reached. That's when one of the residents spoke up and made a plea for amity, meaning accord, and the name stuck.

By the turn of the century the area was a popular tourist destination, with large hotels fronting the ocean. Famous actors and notorious gangsters made regular visits; mob boss Al Capone had his own private suite.

This peaceful town has become famous in later years for the Amityville Horror, a novel made into a popular movie. The events depicted are said to have been based on a true story of a resident who massacred his family and so many tourists came to visit the scene that the house had to be renovated and the address changed. The house is still uninhabited.
