About Anniston
The city of Anniston is the county seat of Calhoun County and boasts a population of more than 24,000 residents. Although settled long before the Civil War, the Confederacy built an iron furnace to take advantage of the area's minerals. The Union destroyed it in 1865. In 1872, the furnace was rebuilt by the Woodstock Iron Company. Originally planned to be named Woodstock, the town was later renamed Anniston after Annie Scott Tyler - the wife of railroad president Alfred L. Tyler. It was chartered in 1873. Situated in a wood-lined valley of the Appalatian foothills, Anniston is plentiful in outdoor recreational activities including fishing and camping with many attractive museums.
