About Athens
Athens, named after the ancient city of Greece, is the county seat of Limestone County in Alabama. The cities current location was originally a camping ground for Cherokee Indians. The land was purchased by the US after settlers came in 1806. It was founded in 1818 by John Coffee, Robert Beaty, John D. Carroll, and John Read. Its citizens formed the Athens Female Academy which later became Athens State University.

The city was attacked in 1864 by Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Moses W. Hannon with 600 man cavalry but was thwarted by the Unions own Emil Adams with just 100 men.

Athens was the home of William Wyatt Bibb and brother Thomas Bibb, the first and second Governors of Alabama. Many homes in the city date back to the antebellum period making them all local historic buildings. It also procured the states first Post-Reconstruction Governor.

Traditionally, Athens was a cotton & railroad city but after the aerospace boom of the 50's & 60's it became more involved in the nearby industry of Huntsville. The offer local arts and entertainment like the Southern Splendor Chorus who sings year round.
