Athens Town - Court

About Athens
On the eastern end of Greene County in the Catskills, the town of Athens is a whistle stop on the boat ride to Albany. Once an important shipbuilding center, the Athens shipyard has seen river boats of both sail and steam set forth over the years.

Formed as a town in 1815, the first settlers of Athens were devout Lutherans of German origin and called the place Loonenburg. After the Revolutionary War, in the spirit of elightenment that the Founding Fathers had instilled, the name was changed to honor the seat of ancient democracy.

In the middle of the Hudson River, marking the mud flats where many ships have gone aground, the Athens lighthouse is an historical monument. First lighted in 1874, the lighthouse guided ships passing the flats to safety, although the stemaer "Swallow" ran aground on nearby Drooper's Island during a snowstorm in 1845. One of the worst accidents in Hudson shipping history, over 40 of the 300 passengers perished despite brave rescue attempts by the people of Athens. Pieces of the ship, including a spiral staircase, were incorporated into the "Swallow House" built by Ira Buckman in Valatie, just down the river from Athens.
