Cohocton Town Court

About Atlanta
A part of Cohocton township in Steuben County, the small community of Atlanta features several historical buildings dating almost from its inception in 1805. The high school is an imposing two story structure with a large bell tower, built around the turn of the century. The E.J. Cottrell Memorial Library on Main Street in Atlanta was founded in 1921 and was named for a local man who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country in World War 1.

The Presbyterian Church in Atlanta is famous throughout the county. As solid a structure as the unshakable faith of its patrons, the four-sided bell tower out reaches even the surrounding hills. The town court is in a renovated bank, once grandly called the Atlanta Natioanl Bank. The Atlanta Depot still stands proudly beside the rarely used railway lines, its tiered gables and red trimmed windows kept in immaculate condition.

The Painted Hills as they are called provide a backdrop for the community. Steubens County was named for a German officer and nobleman who fought alongside the American Revolutionaries in the War of Independence. The settlers who claimed this land after the war found a densely forested fertile paradise that required only hard work in order to carve out a lasting place.
