About Batavia
A poetic reference to the ancient tribes of the Netherlands, Batavia is the central town of Genesee County. Once part of the largest land purchase in American history, the area around Batavia was appropriated by the Holland Land Company in 1792. Purchased from Robert Morris, a notable banker, the "Holland Purchase" became a byword for substantial land deals.

Batavia was bypassed by the Erie Canal in 1825 and saw its place of precedence in western New York go to Buffalo and Rochester. The main industries in town served the agricultural market, and Batavia did reach prominence in the manufacture of tractors. The Harvester line of tractors and combines were built in Batavia and the area remains an important center for tool and die industries and agricultural services such as milk processing.

Renamed Genesee County in 1802, the region takes its name from a Seneca word meaning "beautiful valley." A bountiful spot, this region was densely populated in pre-Columbian times and yields a wealth of artifacts for archaeological studies.
