About Bedford
At the county seat of Lawrence County, Indiana sits Bedford, Indiana with its population of 13,768. The town was founded in 1825 when the county seat was moved from Palestine, Indiana to Bedford, Indiana. Palestine, Indiana was located near the White River and was determined to be unhealthy due to an outbreak in malaria caused by mosquitoes. The new site for the county seat was Bedford, Indiana so named because of a prominent businessman who had recently moved from Bedford, Tennessee.
Bedford in known as the limestone capital of the world, and is surrounded by limestone quarries which are often used by residents for swimming although it is dangerous. Most of the limestone used in the building of the Washington D.C. monuments came from Bedford limestone quarries. The federal government also gave Bedford over 700,000 dollars in grants to build an eight-story replica of the Great Pyramid, but it was never completed.
