The most populous of all counties in the USA, Kings County encloses the city of Brooklyn, population over 2.5 million people. Technically a borough of New York City, residents of Brooklyn refer to themselves as a city outside New York. Brooklyn was an indpendent city until consolidated in 1898 and maintains a distinct culture and proud heritage.

Founded by the Dutch, Brueckelen was the name given to the area by the first settlers, a town near Utrecht in Holland. That name evolved over the years to its present form, adapted by the waves of immigrants drawn here in the early 1800s. The population of Brooklyn doubled every ten years during the first half of the 19th century, as newcomers sought opportunity in the many industrial services and the bustling ship-building yards of Brooklyn harbor. The completion of the Brooklyn Bridge and the narrowly passed vote to confirm consolidation with the five boroughs created New York City as we know it and triggered the golden age of Brooklyn. The Brooklyn Dodgers, Coney Island and the Brooklyn Naval Yard are all sentimental icons of that age, immortalized in popular culture.
