About Cambridge City
One of Cambridge City, Indiana’s most colorful characters was General Solomon Meredith. Traveling by foot from North Carolina General Meredith arrived in Cambridge City in 1829 where he then served as Wayne County Sheriff until 1838. The old Meredith home or Oak Farm is still located in Cambridge City.
Known for its abundance of historic architecture, there are many historic landmarks in Cambridge City. The Opera House is a grand three story ornate building built in 1868 and although only the first floor is still in use it once held a diverse venue of musicals, traveling shows and plays.
Four sisters often referred to as the Overbeck sisters became famous for their pottery in 1911. Although there earlier residence is now a private home the Overbeck Museum displays many of their original art pieces and is located on the lower floor of the Cambridge City Public Library.
