About Canandaigua
The city of Canandaigua is the county seat of Ontario County. An Iroquois word meaning the "chosen spot" the settlement was made on what was once the main village of the Seneca nation. An important treaty of friendship between the newly formed United States and the Iroquois was signed here in 1794. The treaty is still recognized by the current federal government today.

It was in the Canandaigua debtor's jail that Jessie Hawley published his series of essays on the Erie Canal project, works which would prove influential in the final plan of the canal. The town also exhibits one of the few remaining Octagon Houses, a fad of architecture inspired by phrenologist and amateur architect Orson Squire Fowler from nearby Cohocton, New York.
