About Canton
A town near the St. Lawrence River, Canton was chosen as a name in 1805 by the town's founders because of strong trade links with China at that time. The center of St. Lawrence County, Canton is the birthplace of Frederic Remington, the artist who gave the world a romantic image of the Old West through his portraits and landscapes.

Canton was also the residence of Silas Wright, a New York State Governor and Senator. His residence has been made into a museum, commemorating his life, and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

On the eastern edge of town is the campus of St. Lawrence University, the oldest co-educational university in the state of New York. A four year liberal arts college, St. Lawrence was founded in 1856. The school's alumni lists notables such as actors Kirk Douglas and Viggo Mortensen and the St. Lawrence Saints Hockey team has produced several NHL players and coaches.
