About Carthage
A village within the town of Wilna in Jefferson County, Carthage takes its name from the ancient city in North Africa that was such an adversary of Rome and made famous the name Hannibal. Straddling the Black River, Carthage is adjacent to the Fort Drum Military Reservation where nearly 80,000 troops are stationed for training. Across the eastern end of Lake Ontario and the border with Canada, this area has always seen an American military presence, especially during the War of 1812 when Canada was not on such friendly terms with the USA.

Devestated by several fires in the 1800s, the area around Carthage contains several ruins of damaged and abandoned houses, mills and factories. The State Street Historical District is on the register of National Historic Places as an example of turn of the century brickrows. Carthage is the birthplace of filmmaker John Carpenter, best known for his horror movie classic "Halloween."
