Cazenovia Village - Court Clerk

About Cazenovia
A town within the Holland Purchase area, the town of Cazenovia was named for the surveyor's boss. Theophilus Cazenove was an agent for the Holland Land Company which purchased large parts of western New York and it was his direct report, a surveyor named John Lincklaen, who actually founded the village in 1793 and named it after his supervisor. Whether Lincklaen was trying to score points with his boss or was just following orders is a nuance of historical records that is lost to time.

The village is on the southeastern corner of Cazenovia Lake at the western edge of Madison County. The town is also the site of Cazenovia College, rated one of the best colleges in America, which was created in 1824 as a seminary school.

Lincklaen's mansion on the south shore of the lake, called the Lorenzo mansion, is an historic site as is the Albany Street area. Everywhere in Cazenovia the visitor can see evidence of the pride the residents of this town take in their unique community.
