About Centre
Centre is a city in Cherokee County, Alabama. The county was created in 1836 and was named for the Cherokee Indians who once lived in the area. The famed Cherokee Chief Pathkiller lived in the center of the town which was formerly naked Turkeyville. The english spelling of the name was kept because of the city's central location in the county.
John Jonathan Pratt, who invented what is believed to be the first typewriter, resided in Centre until the eruption of the Civil War preventing financing for his machine known as the pterotype.
Weiss Lake is a known area in Centre, It is a man made reservoir and self-proclaimed "Crappie Capital of the World". A crappie is a freshwater sunfish fished by locals & surrounding areas. The local events include the Avenue of Flags, Taste of Cherokee, the Fall Festival, & the Christmas Parade.
