About Charlestown
Charlestown, Indiana was established in 1808 and named after one of the original surveyors, Charles Beggs, and wasn’t without its own set of problems. Somewhere around 1940 when the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant was built the population increased to the point that it caused a housing shortage. Along with the housing shortage came outbreaks of typhoid and malaria. Charlestown has been doing much better since the beautification and urban renewal projects that began in the 1960’s.
Many of the older buildings in Charlestown were removed during the urban renewal projects and replaced. One such replacement is the Fountain that sits in the town square, conveniently located across from the Jay C store, which allowed the local youth the opportunity to add soap powders to the fountain quite often.
