About Citronelle
Citronelle is a city in Mobile County, Alabama. For thousands of years historical tribes of Choctaw and Creek people and other indiginous people hunted & lived here. Citronelle was first explored by Europeans in the 18th century & was settled in 1811. "Citronelle" is derived from the citronella plant, which grows throughout the town.

Oil was discovered in the area in 1955 & is now proclaimed the Oil Capitol of Alabama. Also, the “Citronelle Dome” is located in the eastern Mississippi Interior Salt Basin of southwest Alabama.

General Richard Taylor surrendered the last significant confederate army under the “Surrender Oak” in 1865. A living history/reenactment of the surrender occurs each year in Citronelle. The historic "Surrender Oak" no longer stands as it was destroyed by a hurricane in 1902.
