About Columbia City
The Whitley County Courthouse located in Columbia City, Indiana was designed by noted architect Brentwood S. Tolan and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. A plaque in front of the courthouse honors former Vice President of the United States Thomas R. Marshall, as Columbia City was his hometown.
Columbia City can credit its stable economy to the industries located within its borders. At one time automobile parts and plastic were produced in large quantities. However Columbia City may be most notable as being the largest producers of blue jeans in the world at one time.
The Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne, and Chicago Railway became a part of Columbia City in 1856 and once completed attracted many businesses and settlers causing the population to triple from 1860 to 1875.
