About Columbus
The county seat of Bartholomew County, Indiana is Columbus. In 1820 General John Tipton bought a log cabin and all of the surrounding land on a small hill overlooking the White River, he named it Tiptonia. In 1821 the town changed the name to Columbus and General John Tipton was so upset by the name change he moved. Later he constructed the first bypass road and bypassed the west side of Columbus when building his road to Seymour.
Columbus is known for its architecture. Such architects as Eero Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Robert Venturi, Cesar Peli, and Richard Meier designed a number of public buildings and sculptures. There are over 60 buildings that sustain Columbus’s reputation as a showcase of modern architecture.
