About Cordova
Cordova is a small city (population estimated at a little over 2,300 in 2005) located along the mouth of the Copper river in southern Alaska. Traditionally part of an area frequented by the local tribe of Eyuk, the modern day city of Cordova was founded in the early 1900's to server the copper industry.

In 1989 the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran aground near the city and caused one of the largest, and certainly the most well-publicized, environmental disasters of the 20th century. The oil spill led to large scale damage to the entire region's salmon and herring populations which led to a local recession in the fishing-intensive economy.
