About Cortland
The geographic center of New York State, Cortland is known as the "Crown City." Arranged atop a plateau surrounded by seven valleys, Cortland is the uppermost city in the state at 1130 feet above sea level. Cortland is also the 41st city in New York to be incorporated as a city.

Created by the Military Tract in 1781, the area was settled by former soldiers who had been assigned to protect the state's western borders during the Revolutionary Way. Cortland County and the village of Cortlandville were named after Pierre van Cortland, the first Lieutenant-Governor of the state.

A traditional agricultural center, the Cortland Apple is one of the gifts to the world of this proud city. Hard rocker Ronnie James Dio is another, the recently deceased rock singer has a street in Cortland named after him.
