Crawfordsville, Indiana located in Montgomery County has an interesting history. In 1813 Williamson Dunn, Henry Ristine, and Major Ambrose Whitlock found the perfect place for a settlement. Surrounded by deciduous forest and with water provided by the nearby Sugar Creek this became the site for what is now Crawfordsville.
Wabash College was founded in Crawfordsville in 1832 and became “The Wabash Teachers Seminary and Manual Labor College.” The college still stands today and has a student body of around 900 students, all of which are male since Wabash College is one of only three remaining all male liberal arts colleges in the entire country.
May 8,2007 was a sad day for Crawfordsville because on this day a quarter block of historic buildings were deliberately set on fire. Although only one person died in the fire and two buildings were completely destroyed the Silver Dollar Fire became widely known though out Indiana.
A local legend became so popular it was featured on a Monster Quest, which appears on The History Channel. The Crawfordsville Monster was first seen in the late 1800’s and was described as a being made of a cloud with glowing red eyes. It quickly became a legend and has since been passed through history.
