About Decatur
With a population of 9,528 people and 4.9 square miles of land between its boundaries Decatur, Indiana sits as the county seat for Adams County. When Indiana claimed statehood in 1816 it was no surprise that Decatur named itself after prominent war hero Stephen Decatur, Jr. who captained one of the 6 original frigates in the US Navy.
To recreate the days of 1840 Decatur an annual Kekionga Festival is celebrated. Artisans, storytellers, and re-enactors demonstrated the frontier lifestyle of trappers and traders. Also included are exciting animal exhibits where animals such as bats, owls and red tail hawks are shown and talked about.
