About Dothan
Dothan (pronounced /ˈdoʊθən/) is a city located in the southeastern corner of the U.S. state of Alabama. Its name derives from Genesis 37:17: "let us go to Dothan”.
Dothan was originally inhabited by members of the Alabama and Creek Native American tribes. The area was coined a local spring "Poplar Head” in the 1700s & 1800s. The first permanent white settlers moved into the area during the early 1830s. Dothan gained the first railroad stop to be built in this region.
Calling itself "The Peanut Capital of the World", Dothan is also the self-proclaimed "Hub of the Wiregrass". Dothan hosted Minor league baseball teams from 1915 to 1917 such as the Boll Weevils, Browns, Rebels, Cardinals and Phillies.
The National Peanut Festival occurs annually in November. The US Army Aviation Museum is located on nearby Fort Rucker. Other sites to see are George Washington Carver Monument, The Featured Players Theater, & the "Joseph" Statue at Millennium Park.
