About East Chicago
Incorporated in 1893, East Chicago, Indiana quickly became one of the first truly industrialized cities in the US. During the peak of the Industrial Revolution it was known as the most industrialized city in the United States as well as the ultimate melting pot. Four out of every five citizens in East Chicago was foreign-born, each with their ethnic based churches, neighborhoods and stores. East Chicago held over seventy different nationalities at one time.
One particular point of interest is the Markdown Historical District. Built by Chicago Industrialist Clayton Mark as worker housing for the Mark Manufacturing Company, he set out to design the most unique neighborhood he could. English Garden Style and Tudor Revival homes all with ample gardens and side yards, 240 of them all together, line the streets nestled between steel mills and gas stations. The homes are beautiful and well worth taking a tour if you have the time.
