About El Centro
The largest American city to lie entirely below sea level, El Centro is also the county seat of Imperial County. Lying close to the Mexican border, El Centro is the eastern anchor of California's border region.

Purcchased by speculators Holt and Barker in 1906 for forty dollars an acre, the area was quickly transformed from farmland to a residential and commercial center. Irrigated by canals diverting water from the Colorado River, the valley saw the formation of the Salton Sea in 1905 when a flood from the river spilled over into a rift of the San Andrea Fault.

Now a commercial and administrative center, half of the jobs in El Centro are in the service and retail sectors. Due to its proximity to Hollywood and desert landscape, El Centro has seen many films calling for desert scenery filmed here.
