About Elmira
The county seat of Chemung County, the City of Elmira is near the Pennsylvania border in the south-central section of New York State. Once known as Newtown, it was the scene of an important battle during the American Revolutionary War. The Newtown Battlefield State Park is just outside the city of Elmira.

Not participating in the battle was settler Abraham Miller, a former captain in the Continental Army who had resigned his post just prior to the outbreak of hostilities and built himself a cabin in what is now Elmira. The area where his cabin stood is named Miller Street and Miller Pond is also named after this early resident. Another famous resident was literary giant Mark Twain who married a local lady and made his home there for a time.

In 1808 the village met at Teal's Tavern to decide on a new name for the town. Local legend has it the tavernkeeper's very pretty daughter Elmira was the inspiration for the choice of name. The town was dubbed "Hellmira" by the Confederate soldiers who were interned there as prisoners during the American Civil War, many of whom perished from neglect.
