Elmsford Village - Court Clerk

About Elmsford
A village in Westchester County, Elmsford is contained within the town of Greenburgh. Named after a giant Elm tree that was a famous contemporary landmark in 1870, the community grew out of disparate farmsteads. Previously known as Storm's Bridge and Hal's Corners, the area carried the names of its principal land owners.

Three of the streets in Elmsford are named after patriots of the Revolutionary War who captured British informant Major John Andre in 1870. Isaac Van Wart, John Paulding and David Williams all have streets named after them and Van Wart's tombstone can be viewed in the colonial era cemetery.

A long-standing legend of Elmsford is that during the Revolutionary War, local tavern owner and town father Isaac Storm invented the term "cocktail" when he ran out of stir sticks and began plucking tail feathers off a plundered Tory roster and serving them in his drinks.
