About Elwood
Having already been established as a town by 1869 Elwood, Indiana was called Quincy at that time but because there was another township in Indiana that had already taken that name the citizens had to rename the town. As they were discussing the matter someone looked up and noticed Elwood Fraiser, the small son of a local citizen, playing nearby; the suggestion was then made to name the town after Elwood, which is how Quincy became Elwood, Indiana on June 15, 1869.
A few notable residents came out of Elwood. David Canary who is most noted for having played ranch foreman Candy Canaday on Bonanza as well as identical twins Stuart and Adam Chandler on All My Children was born in Elwood. Poet Jared Carter and United States Secretary of Labor James J. Davis were also born in Elwood.
