About Fairfax
Fairfax, a town in Marin County, is named after a Scottish nobleman who was lured to California by the Gold Rush of the 1850s. Lord Fairfax was also the mediator of America's last political duel in 1861, when he attempted to reconcile the political differences between Daniel Showalter and Charles Piercy. Unsuccesful in resolving the dispute, Piercy was killed in the duel that followed.

The home of Lord Fairfax became a hotel in later years, famously employing Irving Berlin on a rooftop piano, and is now the Marin Town and Country Club. On a highland plateau near the coast, the town of Fairfax has been the chosen place of residence for celebrities such as singer/songwriter Van Morrison and author Frank Herbert.
