About Fairfield
Fairfield is a city in Jefferson County, Alabama. Founded in 1910, the city's featured speaker at the dedication ceremony was former President Theodore Roosevelt. Originally named Corey, it was changed to Fairfield. It was planned as a model city to house workers.
U.S. Steel's location in Fairfield continues to be the major industry & employer. Three railroads serve the area: CSX Transportation, Norfolk Southern Railway, and short-line Birmingham Southern Railroad, which is headquartered in Fairfield.
Willie Mays, famed negro baseball player, attended school in Fairfield becoming one of its famouse local residents. Also known in the area is the Alabama Historical Radio Museum and the Fairfield Music Festival.
