About Floral Park
A village on Long Island, Floral Park is named for its extensive flower gardens. This area had more than two dozen flower farms after the Civil War, when the region was called Hinsdale.

America's first seed-catalog business was started here in 1874 by entrepreneur John Lewis Childs. The succes of his business led to expansion of the Post Office and a flourishing of the village. To further promote the horticulture business, the town was renamed Floral Park and the streets were renamed after flowers.

The Long Island Railroad renamed their East Hinsdale station to Floral Park in 1888. In 1903 the village had dedicated more than 200 acres to flower beds and the post office was drawing comparisons to those of major cities like Chicago for the amount of orders from the seed catalog.
