About Fort Edward
Fort Edward was one of the earliest fortifications built by the English in Upstate New York. Built at the point where the Hudson River ceases to be navigable, Fort Edward commands what the natives referred to as "The Great Carrying Place."

The portage route from Fort Edward, or "The Fort" as it is commonly referreed to, traces a path to Lake George and was the main access route to the Champlain Valley. A stockade was first built here in 1709 and the fortifications were increased. In 1775, Sir William Johnson renamed it Fort Edward and built a military complex on nearby Roger's Island.

A key transportation point since the early days of settlement, Fort Edward today has four different train lines connecting through the town.
