About French Camp
The terminus of the California-Oregon trail used by French fur traders, French Camp grew up around their yearly camp at this site. The oldest community in San Joaquin County, the area was granted by the Mexican governor to Guillermo Gulnac in in 1844.

Gulnac's business partner was a German explorer, Karl Weber, who changed his name to Carlos Maria after settling in the area. However, during the Mexican-American War, Weber accepted a captaincy in the US Army and sold his interests in the Mexican-owned businesses. After the war he returned to the area to found the nearby town of Stockton.

The first permanent settlement of French Camp is now an historic site of California. Built by Thomas Lindsay in 1844, the building still stands in the downtown area.
