About Fresno
The fifth largest city in California, Fresno takes its name for the Spanish word for ash tree and features on an ash leaf on its official city emblem. The abundant ash trees on either side of the San Joaquin river framed the early settlements of the Gold Rush area.

Although Millerton was the first county seat of Fresno county, flooding caused many county residents to relocate to what would become the Fresno area. With the coming of the Central Pacific Railroad to Fresno, the city became the county seat and grew rapidly, incorporating as a city in 1885.

Fresno was the test site for the BankAmericard, which later developed into the Visa card. There is a thriving multicultural community in Fresno today, with large Japanese and Armenian communities.
