About Gridley
The town of Gridley was named after its founder George Gridley, an Illinois stockbroker who started a sheep ranch here at the second attempt. George Gridley's first attempt to drive a herd of sheep across the country ended with only he and his name arriving to found the community in California.

Returning home to Illinois, he managed to keep some of his sheep together at the second attempt and founded a prosperous sheep ranch and the center of a new community. His descendants still live in the town.

Orchards and field crops began to diversify the economy and after the building of a Central Pacific Railroad station here, commercial interests soon followed. Gridley was, until recently, the site of one of the largest peach canning operations in the world.
