About Hagerstown
Hagerstown, Indiana got its name from the Hagerstown Canal Company, which funded the building of the northern section of the Whitewater Canal that borders Hagerstown. Because flooding was such a problem for some of the cities south of Hagerstown when the canal was built it was built on the west side because of the slight elevation. This caused Hagerstown to suffer almost no damage when the floodwaters devastated several of the southern cities in 1847 and in 1865, the costly repairs and poor return on investment caused the canal to go out of business.
The Perfect Circle Company, which manufactured piston rings, once had a home in Hagerstown. This became such a large part of who Hagerstown is that the Perfect Circle is the center of the Hagerstown Museum and Arts Place automotive section.
