About Hawthorne
The city of Hawthorne owes its name to the romantic inclinations of the founder's daughter. Benjamin Harding deferred to his daughter Laurine when selecting a name and the surname of the young lady's favorite author Nathaniel Hawthorne, who penned The Scarlet Letter and also shared the same birthday as Ms. Harding, was chosen.

An agricultural center in its early days, the ranches and farms drew refugees from the droughts of Oklahoma and Texas to swell the population in the 1930s. With the arrival of the Northrop Aviation Company, the area began to expand rapidly and was a boom town known as the "Cradle of Aviation."

The childhood home of the Beach Boys, there is a small memorial of their former home erected where it used to stand before being demolished to make room for the freeway. Hawthorne is also the birthplace of Marilyn Monroe.
