About Herkimer
Settled by Palatine Germans in the early 1770s, the town of Herkimer was once known as German Flatts. Renamed in memory of Nicholas Herkimer, a General of the Tyron County Militia who died during the Revolutionary War, the town was expanded due to a surveyor's error in 1788.

Surveryor-General Simeon DeWitt switched the names of Herkimer and German Flatts when he completed his survey in 1788. It was decided that changing the town names would be easier than changing the survey, so German Flatts is now on the south side of the Mohawk River and Herkimer on the north shore.

Herkimer County is known for vast deposits of quartz, known as "Herkimer diamonds". The derogatory slang term "Herkimer Jerkimer" has entered the lexicon of big city elites as a phrase to refer to someone from the countryside.
