About Highland
In 1847 Michael and Judith Johnston became the first settlers of Highland, Indiana. The city became larger in 1880 when the railroad brought Dutch settlers to the area. Highland is one of the towns along the Little Calumet River that has seen it’s fair share of flooding. As recently as 2008 flooding in Highland has been a major problem.
Wicker Memorial Park, located in Highland, was dedicated in 1927 by President Calvin Coolidge to honor the “Dough Boys” of World War I. It has since become one of the most utilized parks in the region. A dog run, tennis courts, picnic areas, 3 miles and trails, a first class playground and an 18 hole golf course are just a few of the features offered at Wicker Park.
