About Hobart
George Earle bought what is now Hobart, Indiana from the Potawatomi Indians. When he bought the land he built a dam on the Deep River which created Lake George. He named the area around the lake Hobart after his brother Fredrick Hobart Earle, who never left England.
The Indiana Botanic Gardens is the oldest and largest retailer of medicinal herbs in the nation. Originally founded in 1878 the business was started in John Meyer’s cottage but eventually got too big for such a small area. The business continued to expand over the years.
One of the buildings that housed the Indiana Botanic Gardens in 1926 is still standing and being used by the Reaper’s Realm Haunted Mansion.
