About Horseheads
The curiously named town of Horseheads is in Chemung County in upstate New York. The area was named by the Iroquois for the string of bleached horse skulls left behind by an expeditionary force of the Continental Army in 1779.

The incident that gave the town its name occured in the fall of 1779 when an expeditionary force under the command of General Sullivan was returning to Fort Reid through a wooded valley. Slowed down by a number of sick and disabled horses, the order was given to kill the horses that couldn't keep up and leave them where they lay. Sometime later the Iroquois in the area gathered the bleached skulls and arranged them along the trail. The landmark served to give the region an enduring moniker.

The valley of the horse's heads was first settled in 1787, making it one of the oldest settlements in Chemung County.
