About Indio
The town of Indio owes its existence to the railway but it has grown into much more than a railroad town. The builders of the Southern Pacific Railroad needed a halfway station between Los Angeles and Yuma in order to clean and re-water the engines and there were few other sources of water in the Colorado Desert. Named Indian Wells originally, the name was changed to Indio, the Spanish word for Indian, after it was realized there were already too many Indian Wells on the railway.

Innovative irrigation techniques led to a growth in agriculture, including the first successful introduction of the Middle Eastern Date Palm. The California Date industry became centered around the town of Indio and led to a strong cultural tie with the Middle East that continues to this day.
