About Irvington
Named after popular writer Washington Irving, author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and the creator of Rip van Winkle, Irvington is a town on the Hudson River. Famed as a summer residence for the well-heeled denizens of New York City, Irvington is a peaceful refuge on the river.

Washington Irving was still alive when the town incorporated in his name. He had purchased the famous home of Wolfer Eckert, a notable revolutionary nest that had been partially burned by the British, and remodelled it as his private residence of "Sunnyside". Today the house is a museum of the author's life and times.

Fittingly for a town named for the creator of Rip van Winkle, Irvington appears to be a place where time has stood still. Many of the mansions and estates built during the 1800s still stand and the town is able to transport the visitor to a different time through the historical buildings and artifacts.
