About Jamaica
Despite a large number of residents of Jamaican heritage, the name given to Jamaica, New York has no connection to the Caribbean island. Jamaica is a derivation of a native word for beaver, adopted for the region by the first English settlers in 1664.

When Queens County became part of New York City in 1898, Jamaica was the county seat. Jamaica Station became a central transfer point on the Long Island Railraod and Jamaica Avenue, known locally as "the Av", connected the communities of Brooklyn and Jamaica over the Brooklyn Bridge. The Av is the site of King Manor, once the home of founding father Rufus King and now a museum.

In the 1950s, Jamaica became a neighborhood identified with middle income Afro-American families. That cultural influence is still predominant, however intensive immigration from South Asia and the Caribbean has changed the flavor of the city.
