About Jamestown
The birthplace of America's beloved funny girl Lucille Ball, Jamestown is located in the county of Chautauqua. Once known as the "Furniture Capital of the World", Jamestown was long a center of furniture manufacturing and a major producer of mattresses.

Named after James Prendergast, an early settler, Jamestown incorporated as a village in 1827. The Erie railroad brought prosperity as a manufacturing center and the golden age of Jamestown was ushered in.

The James Prendergast Library is ranked amongst the top ten in the nation for small towns. A population with large numbers of Swedish descendants, the local orphange is named the Gustavus Adolphus Home for Children after Sweden's warrior king of the Reformation.
