About Jeffersonville
In 1776 Fort Finney was built where the Kennedy Bridge is now built, however in 1776 the fort was abandoned and the area then became known as Jeffersonville, Indiana. Thomas Jefferson designed the grid pattern that was used to form the city and in his honor the city was Jeffersonville.
In the 1870’s most of Jeffersonville’s residents were German immigrants, but by the 1920’s things had changed. The Ku Klux Klan became very popular within the city limits, because of an anti-KKK element in both Louisville and New Albany.
Jeffersonville is now the home of the United States Census Bureau’s National Processing Center. The bureau is the central center for the collecting, capturing and delivering of data as well as being one of Southern Indiana’s largest employers.
